What is the workshop Model?
WORKSHOP IS A TEACHING STRUCTURE THAT PUSHES STUDENTS TO BE CREATIVE AND RESPONSIBLE IN THEIR OWN LEARNING. THE WORKSHOP MODEL ASKS STUDENTS TO TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR OWN LEARNING, BECOMING ACTIVE AND ENGAGED IN THEIR WORK AND DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERSTANDING.
What does mrs. Bridgeman do during independent work time?1.) Conferencing individually with students, assessing their comprehension, fluency, and depth of understanding about the books they have self-selected to read, is one of the roles of the teacher in the workshop model. In writing, the teacher is able to provided specific feedback and support with grammar, structure, and language. During this time, the teacher is able to provide individualized reading and writing support and help each student to grow in specific areas as needed to foster literacy growth. This is also a wonderful time for students and teachers to create attainable goals for the students as readers and writers.
2.) Strategy groups and guided reading groups are also about to meet during this work time. The teacher will assess which students need continued support with a particular reading or writing skill, and will be able to model, practice, and provide an assignment to further practice the skill independently. Small groups provide an opportunity for differentiation, as well as a gradual release of ability to perform skills with scaffolded support, to then being able to do them independently. |
